Furnace Troubleshooting

Heating air flow problems

When your furnace is turned on but there are heating air flow problems, there is definitely a mechanical problem.  The culprit could be a worn out fan belt, or a bearing that is failing. Another possible reason for the heating air flow problems could be there is an issue with the fan motor, such as a worn out part.  Again, all of these possibilities are mechanical in nature and can be complex. So we recommend bringing in a licensed heating and a/c expert.

Heat exceeds set temperature

Honeywell_Thermostats

So you’ve set your thermostat to a certain temperature and the heat level exceeds the set temperature.  One possible cause is that the thermostat is mounted crookedly. If this looks to be the case, remove the cover to the thermostat, loosen the screws that hold the thermostat unit to the wall and then level the thermostat.  Retighten the screws and replace the cover. Another possible cause is that the thermostat heat anticipator needs adjusting.  This device is mounted in the center of many mechanical thermostats and it calibrates at which point the thermostat turns off the furnace burners. Adjusting this … Continue reading

Pilot Light will Not Stay Lit

If the pilot light will not stay lit, that is when you have stopped pushing down on the pilot light button, and then the pilot light goes out, then the issue is a faulty thermocouple.  It will need to be replaced and is a more complicated procedure with special tools involved.  We strongly suggest you hire a furnace technician for this work. Now if the pilot light will not start at all, even when the pilot light button is being held down, then there is likely a problem with the gas getting to the furnace. It could be as simple … Continue reading

How to Light your Gas Pilot Light

If your homes furnace has stopped working, it is likely that the pilot light has gone out. The pilot light in effect creates an electrical signal, when this signal is interrupted (when the pilot light goes out) the gas control valve will not allow gas to go to the furnace.  This is a safety feature that prevents gas build up and explosions.  There are different reasons why the pilot light goes ranging from a gust of wind to mechanical problems or gas supply problems.  In any case if your furnace is no longer working, the first thing to do is … Continue reading

Your Gas Furnace Makes Noise

All furnaces make noise. There is the noise of the gas burner, the noise of the motor starting, the noise of the air circulating and the noise of the duct-work cooling after the heat stops. However, if you furnace is making a lot of noise, there might be something wrong. While the furnace is running, listen to the noises you hear and try to pin-point where they are coming from. If the noises are in the burner, call a furnace technician right away. 1. Noise in the blower(fan) box. Junk in the fan box – Stop the furnace and open … Continue reading
