It happens to all households; the drain in your sink is clogged up, so now what? Most of us instinctively reach for the container of Drano, (or rush down to the store to procure a bottle) pour it down the drain and presume the problem is fixed. However, this is usually not a permanent solution. Here are some drain cleaning tips.
It we know what’s causing the clog, then we can take the right course of action. The most common reason for clogged drains is an accumulation of hair. In particular this is the case with shower drains. There is a nifty little tool called a drain stick which is very helpful to unclog shower drains. This stick has barbs on it, and when inserted then pulled out of the drain, can bring out much of the hair clot with it.
Now if the clog is due to a buildup of greasy hair and bathroom products then obviously this solution will not work. If you suspect this is the case try using a natural solution, rather than knee jerking to the Drano. Often times a strong vinegar and lemon solution can fix the problem, if the issue is just build up that is coating the pipes, and slowing the draining process.
If you have the skills, take apart the pipes of the drain and clean them. An old toothbrush and brillo pad can do the trick here. Be sure you are able to put everything back together again before you begin!
The best drain cleaning tip is prevention. Put hair strainers on all your drains, you can clean them instead of clogging up your drains. Once a month run a natural solution (like vinegar and lemon) down your drains to break down any accumulating greasy or waxy build up on the insides of the pipes.
However, if you have tried to dig out the clog in the drain, tried drain cleaners, (whether Drano or natural solutions) and you still have a clog then you need to call in your licensed plumber. He will have the tools and expertise to unclog your drains.
