Every homeowner has experienced the torture of drip, drip, drip. Our tendency is to let the problem ride which costs us money and aggravation each month. Fortunately we can fix a leaking faucet without calling a plumber. You will need a Phillips screwdriver, pliers and possible a wrench.
You need to first turn off the water supply to the sink. Most homes have a shut off valve for the sink under the sink in the commode. Turn it clockwise all the way. Now turn on the faucet to drain out any remaining water.
To remove the handle of the faucet take out the screw on the top of the handle. This could be covered by plastic or metal for cosmetic reasons.
You should see a nut holding the faucet parts in place, remove this nut, carefully, and you can pull out the internal pieces. Do this slowly and note how the pieces fit together. Write it down so you do not forget.
You will see the washers or O-rings. 90% of the time the reason faucet leaks is because of worn out washers or O-rings and these are what you need to replace. Go to your local hardware store and get the exact replacement. Any slight variance at all and the faucet will continue to leak.
Before reassembling the unit, take a look at the parts, and if you see any build up of gunk or mineral deposits clean them off with any cleaning solution and a stiff brush. If they are still corroded after you clean them than you might consider replacing them as well.
However first put the pieces back together. If the leak persists then the faucet unit will probably have to be replaced. Your local hardware or home Improvement store can assist you or you can call your local plumbing professional.
